Reality vs. Fantasy

I’ve talked, at length, about the importance of setting appropriate expectations in the past. I’ve written on and on about how, if you expect one thing and get another, you’re going to have a bad time. This seems like common sense, sure, but try telling that to fans of professional wrestling this time of the year. With the Royal Rumble upon us, it’s time for all of us to fantasy book ourselves into a frenzy… only for that frenzy to end in disappointment. It’s not as if it’s hard to figure out why that’s the case. We’ve gotten exciting rumbles before, for example when John Cena and Edge returned in 2008 and 2010 to win their respective rumbles after being out with injuries. Shawn Michaels went bell to bell. Stone…

WWE Draft Prospects – The Final Cut

Sadly, Goldust does not make the final edition of this list. I won’t apologize for spoiling that for you right off the bat. But I will make it up to you by offering a bonus listing. Since Austin Aries got run out of town while this list was being put together, I’ve decided to replace him in that spot with another talent, albeit one who provides the same amount of value in the ring. Whatever number Austin Aries was – Daniel Bryan Look, I understand that DB is retired from in ring perpforming in the WWE. But the key word/acronym there is WWE. It’s no secret that Bryan is willing to risk his health to get back into a wrestling ring and f you want to be the person that…

WWE Draft Prospects – Part Two

20. Braun Strowman (33) The Monster among Men kicks off the second installment of our top forty and rolls in at number 20. When I started dreaming of this list Strowman was nowhere near it, but all that has changed over the past few months. He’s gone from being another big guy being pushed solely for his size to being a believable monster, someone who can go toe to toe with anyone in the company. That’s not the crazy part though, the crazy thing is that he’s getting a massive crowd reaction every week; and most of the time, those reactions are cheers. In today’s day and age, big guys get booed. That’s just the way it is. That’s just, for lack of a better phrase, fucking nuts. Giant…

WWE Superstars as Prospects (Ranked)

It’s no secret that I’m crazy for all things draft related and with the NFL and my fantasy draft’s just having finished recently coupled with the NBA draft sitting right around the corner, I’ve got a full blown case of draft fever. So, naturally, that’s going to leak into other parts of my life as well. Did I spend ten minutes coming up with a list of the best Chipotle bowl ingredients earlier today? You bet your sweet ass I did (and you’d be surprised as how high the corn salsa was on the list). So, naturally, I had to tie that in to another one of my favorite past times: pro wrestling. Money in the Bank got me thinking about which superstar competing in the ladder match…

The New Age of Smackdown

A little over a month ago, right after Wrestlemania 33, the WWE announced it would be implementing what they called a “superstar shakeup” which would move performers between the Raw and Smackdown brands. This is, in short, a pretty big deal for a lot of reasons. First, it as it promised to give us new matches. There’s only so many matches you can have with a small pool of wrestlers, so changing them around lets us see new performers work together. It promises new story-lines for these matches, which out of necessity will elevate certain some wrestlers to new heights while lower others out of the limelight. With new talent on both shows, it would be up to different men to lead the brands of Raw on Monday and Smackdown…

Love Letter to Pro Wrestling

Things have been getting a little too… philosophical in here. A little too serious maybe. So we’re going to take a break from that; after all, we’ve got a lifetime of politics and sports to pick about for life lessons. So I’ve got an idea about something I’m really excited to do. I’m going to talk about some things that I really enjoy, maybe some events, maybe some abstract ideas, probably some people, maybe a horse, who knows? One thing I do know, is that there’s only one logical place to start. And that’s with the thing I consider to be the last great form of live theater and something I’ve already touched on at length in this blog so far: Professional Wrestling. Call if sports entertainment, call…

2017 Royal Rumble

Tomorrow night the WWE presents us with the first event on the road to Wrestlemania in the form of a six hour spectacle called the Royal Rumble. There’s a ton of buzz this year as this particular rumble is becoming one of the most hyped in recent memory. For those of your that aren’t familiar with all of the ins and outs of professional wrestling (at least not yet anyways, we’ll get there), we’ll give you a quick breakdown. The word Royal isn’t really all that important here, considering it has nothing to do with kings or knights or anything of the sort; no, it’s the rumble part that really matters. A giant match containing 30 participants whose only job is to NOT be thrown over the top rope,…

The Chin Who Got the Win

First off, let’s get right to it: Colin Kaepernick did not go quite as I planned. You know what? That’s alright. One of the smartest women I’ve ever known used to say (all the time) “You can’t win them all”. Some people I know might disagree with that, but, hell, I’m not going to argue with my grandma. And that makes it okay. Or at least that’s how I’m going to rationalize it. Anyways, this week, I’m making two picks. Fuck it. It’s my blog. After a 5-2 start, I’m going to ramp it up this week. So I’m making dual locks of the century. The first is the Minnesota Vikings -3. They’ve been wizards at covering the spread and if Philly took an L against Detroit, I…

Quick Observations

For those of you who watched the WWE’s Cruiser Weight Classic, you might have seen an image that should not surprise you if you read this blog. The King of Kings has taken another step in his grab for power and extended his presence to the cruiserweight division on RAW. For those of you counting at home, he’s now been directly responsible for the crowning of 2/5 of the champions on RAW. He’s doing whatever he can to expand his power now that its seemingly been usurped by his wife and Mick Foley. Anyways, enough pro wrestling for one week. Let’s check in on those gambling predictions from last week: Lamar Miller rushing title – Currently leading the league Cowboys to have worst record – 0 and 1 Kirk Cousins…

Sports Entertainment

We talked about some NFL Picks last week, and I’m here to make a few more. First, I never said who was going to win that Super Bowl match-up. Apparently, everyone in Vegas agrees with me that the Green Bay Packers hoist their fifth Lombardi trophy because tons of money has been coming in on Rodgers and company from what ESPN reported this morning. It makes sense too, as their odds on Bovada have jumped from 10:1 in June to 6:1 currently. For those of you who aren’t aware of how sports betting works, 6:1 means that betting 100 dollars wins you 700 in return – 600 plus your initial bet of 100. Talking about gambling has me all fired up now, so that’s going to be the theme of…
